Our broad membership network comprises extraordinary design and industry professionals across both the commercial and residential sectors.
Interior design is one of the UK’s largest-growing creative industries – it is innovative, diverse, competitive, and has a very bright future ahead. The UK design economy generated £85.2 billion in gross value added (GVA) in 2016, which was around 7% of the country’s total GVA that year. 2022 presented a fresh landscape for investment from countries that recognise Britain’s potential as the third-largest creative industry in the world. We’re here to show that the British interior design sector is ready for international trade.
The SBID has been instrumental in liaising with the government on industry matters including Building Regulations, Health & Safety, and Intellectual Property Protection. As part of the Genesis Initiative, the all-party lobby group for SME, SBID contribute to its Manifesto in representing the interests of small businesses across the UK, providing industry data to the Bank of England for the interior design profession, as well as working across the House of Lords and House of Commons for professional trading standards. The outcome has encouraged and enabled growth which generated a variety of trade agreements for the UK. SBID has, since its incorporation in 2009, proudly held the highest position of authority for professional interior design governance and growth.

“Our relationship with SBID is a genuine partnership: as SBID has grown and developed, Interior Architecture and Design at the Arts University Bournemouth has been encouraged to grow and develop under the generous, constructive and critical friendship of the Society and their team of dedicated professionals. The benefit to the students who pass through, and graduate from, the course has been enormous, whether in being able to gain key insights into leading contemporary practice through lively debate and critique of their work on the course or employment opportunities across the creative industries at the highest level when they graduate. The students value the enhancements to their education that working together will bring. They know that they can depend on this relationship and the support of SBID long after they leave university, as they progress through their professional lives. The academic team at the Arts University Bournemouth are proud of their partnership with SBID and look forward to working with them in the years to come.”
