To maintain public confidence, SBID defines its mission to achieve title recognition for interior designers in the UK. To meet strategic objectives, SBID acts in the public interest by promoting professional standards for the industry at large.

SBID encourage members to engage in events and workshops to improve their personal development and career prospects, as well as exercise standards that protect the wider public through the ethical guidelines and code of conduct.

Our Boards, committees and councils therefore reflect the eclectic mix of specialist expertise that shape the profession, bringing unique insights from their position of knowledge and experience.
The Executive Board is SBID’s governing body, responsible for the oversight of activities and engagements to agree strategy, policies and budgets for investment in long term developments.

Vanessa Brady is an international award-winning interior designer, business consultant, and founder of the Society of British and International Interior Design (SBID) with over thirty years of experience in the construction, B2B procurement and post-analysis of the design profession. She speaks on behalf of the UK Government for the Creative Industries to represent the interests of the interior design profession and received an OBE from the Queen, recommended by the Prime Ministers office for services to Interior Design and the UK Economy.
Most recently, Vanessa received the Freedom of the City of London, proposed by the City of London Police following an extensive campaign for protecting Intellectual Property rights of interior designers in the UK. She was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Design in recognition of her achievements for the education of interior design from Southampton Solent University, and won the Woman in the City Award for the Built Environment in 2013.
Andrew has been a lawyer since 1988 and has been a Partner at Clifford Chance LLP throughout the majority of his working life. Specialising in major infrastructure projects and property development work, his expertise is grounded in Private Finance Initiative and Public-Private Partnerships (PFI/PPP).
Padmini is an ACCA (Associate of Chartered Certified Accountants) and received a MBA in Financial Management and BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting

Mark Engelman, Head of Intellectual Property Hardwicke, is a barrister who has acted for entities which includes Apple Inc, Deep Purple, Alexander McQueen, Asos, Astra Zenica, Super Dry, Harvard University and many others in their intellectual disputes. He holds academic positions at St. Edmunds Cambridge and Notre Dame Universities and was head of IP at The Body Shop before returning to the IP bar.
*Mark is currently acting in a professional capacity for SBID in a case it has brought before the Intellectual Property Court, London. To prevent a conflict of interest, Mark has temporarily stood down from the Board and will resume the role on conclusion.
Gerald Bowey is President of the Chartered Institute of Journalists. As founder member of International Building Press (IBP) established in 1969 as a membership organisation consisting of editors, journalists and communications professionals serving the built environment sector. He stepped down in November 2021 as Chief Executive Officer, after 25 years in the role, and remains an active member. He has over 50 years’ experience in communications, originally in publishing as a member of the editorial team that launched the Housebuilder magazine, and the editor of One Seven Five, the Marylebone residential property newspaper. He subsequently moved into public and media relations focusing on all aspects of business-to-business campaigns and projects.
Pauline is the CEO of Reconstructing Minds, a management consultancy and training company. Pauline has over 22 years’ experience in commercial training and academic qualifications. Pauline has held several leadership positions in the Construction industry and is pivotal in driving educational standards in both the public and private sectors through competency frameworks and digital learning. Pauline was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Education in recognition of her achievements in education from Southampton Solent University.
Frazer is a consultant specialising in Place focused Social Cohesion, DDR, Memorialization, Architectural Conservation, Housing Land and Property (HLP) issues. He has worked with UN Agencies in Iraq. He is a specialist in addressing House Land and Property (HLP) issues after conflict and working with everyday sites of violence and conflict primarily in Mosul and Tal Afar 2017-2019. Frazer has worked in Africa, South America, South East Asia on projects that vary from supporting the assimilation indigenous people (the Orang Suku Laut) in Indonesia to developing methods of adaption and resilience to flooding risk in vulnerable communities around Mexico City.
Frazer is also a visiting lecturer at Norges Kreative Høyskole Norway, giving annual building-reuse workshops, lectures and tutorials, and a member of Scottish Parliament: CROSS PARTY GROUP on ARCHITECTURE and the BUILT ENVIRONMENT. Before his work in the humanitarian sector, Frazer was the founding Director of Glasgow School of Art in Singapore and has developed an impressive research portfolio.
Frazer is a Mediator for the field of disputes within the built environment and has worked with the likes of EMBT/RMJM on the New Scottish Parliament, Hubert Jan Henket on the Zonnestraal Sanatorium conservation, Hortus Botanicus projects and many more. He has also worked for Wallpaper Magazine and owns a consultancy called UNIFORM NOVEMBER.com
Hans J. Galutera is the International Education Ambassador of SBID, co-founder of New York-based BG Studio International, Inc. a luxury hospitality and multi-housing NYC Interior Design practice and is the past president of the Board of Directors for IIDA New York Chapter (national peer org and collaborating partner of SBID) He is also an Advisory Board Member for the International Council for Caring Communities (ICCC-UN Habitat) at the United Nations in NYC and a professional member of the Design Institute of Australia (MDIA). He serves as a peer resource, sharing his knowledge, experience, and insight with university faculty across the UK and USA collaborating with online technologies by delivering global learning and intercultural experiences. He works closely with Dr. Vanessa Brady OBE, founder of SBID to develop programs and events that promote and encourage participation in international engagement and cross-cultural exchange.
Tom Marquardt, IIDA, SBID, AMA-EC, defines interdisciplinary design, beginning with his triple major degree in graphic, industrial, and interior design. He subsequently applied this philosophy to marquardt+, his well-respected interdisciplinary design and branded environments studio practice in Chicago, which he created and led for almost three decades.
Prior to that, Tom designed corporate and commercial interior projects and high end showrooms at Swanke Hayden Connell and then Eva Maddox Associates. In 2015, Tom transitioned his practice to join HDR as a Design Principal. In 2017, he accepted the position of Vice President, Director of Interiors for HOK’s Chicago office to contribute to the success of its global practice.

David has been a Fire Safety Inspector with London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (LFEPA) for almost 30 years. He has represented the Fire Authority at the British Standards Institute (BSI).
Eva is the Chairman of the Planning and Environment Committee of the London Borough of Barnet. She is also assistant Cabinet member of Housing and was also a former Mayor of the London Borough of Barnet.
Vasso has over 25 years of diverse international experience managing complex networks of global brands and teams covering multiple regions. She also has broad experience in innovation and big idea/brand development.
Niall became a director of the Board of SBID in 2010 when he was Chief Operating Officer of BRE Group creating the first link with an interior design body due to his significant operational experience in retail management. BRE has since become a charity and Niall is a freelance global consultant. In his previous role at M&S he was involved in developing the company’s approach to sustainable retailing in the built environment.

Kar is the Head of Interior Architecture at Zaha Hadid Architects. He first worked with Zaha Hadid in the 1980s at the beginning of the practice. During this time he worked closely with the studio founder on a number of competitions and architectural projects. He then spent eleven years with Kohn Pedersen Fox, as the Senior Associate Principal responsible for the design and implementation of several mixed use, commercial and retail projects across the USA, Asia and the UK. Following that he spent eight years with Louis Vuitton Malletier in Paris, as the Design Director in charge of the establishment and development of LV stores across the Asia-Pacific Region.
Kar re-joined ZHA in 2014 to set up and lead the new ZHA Interior Architecture cluster. His expertise in retail, commercial, and residential interiors has significantly strengthened ZHA’s architectural offer that includes bespoke interiors, furniture and product design for both private and public projects.

Chris has over 23 years experience creating highly considered and finely crafted interiors for the residences of the most discerning clients. Chris cultivated his holistic design approach; combining Architecture and Interior Design to create beautifully conceived and exquisitely delivered residences for clients who appreciate the value of design excellence. In 2018 he received the coveted Master of Design Award from SBID and is also an award-winning Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Chartered Architect.
Tom defines interdisciplinary design with a degree in graphic, industrial, and interior design. He applies this philosophy to his studio practice and consultancy of over three decades, marquardt+, designing corporate/commercial interiors and high end showrooms. Tom has also been a Design Principal for HDR and Vice President, Director of Interiors for HOK.

Ken is currently serving on Gensler’s Board of Directors and Management Committee. As a Co-Managing Principal of Gensler’s Southeast Region and past Co-Managing Principal of Gensler’s U.K., EMEA and Gulf Regions, Ken is considered a global expert on workplace design and planning, particularly for law firms.
Suzi, a litigator at Mishcon de Reya LLP, advises a wide variety of clients across a range of industries on reputational, intellectual property, contentious trust and general commercial issues. Prior to her legal career, Suzi worked for the international luxury concierge service, Quintessentially and as a football agent licensed by the English FA.
Helen is a journalist and author who writes about design and decoration for the luxury sector, including the FT’s award-winning ‘How To Spend It’ magazine. She also runs her own art consultancy service, London Connoisseur.
David Chang, founder of David Chang Design Associates International Ltd, registered professional members of NCIDQ, SBID, ASID, IIDA, has over 25 years of experience in hospitality and residential interior design and management in both North America and Asia Pacific.
As one of Camira’s environmental ambassadors, Ian has helped the company gain numerous environmental awards, including a Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development.
In his role at Karndean, Alex works closely with the Commercial Sales Director and spends his time with customers and collaborates with industry partners to promote good design and the use of new materials.
Supporting our members at a local level
SBID promotes industry standards and the value of training to professional interior designers at all levels. Our ten regional offices in the UK and our international office in Ukraine each has a regional director that understands the local culture, threats and opportunities of their region. They represent SBID locally across the UK & internationally to act as our member’s local point of contact for networking and CPD events.
