SBID Education: Learning Environments

The SBID Education Council are pleased to invite both Designers and Education professionals to hear a presentation by educationalist, Anne Knock. Having spent 17 years as a primary school teacher and 15 years working directly with schools, systems, teachers, school boards and architects to facilitate change and create collaborative learning environments, Anne has learnt the language of design. During her presentation she will be sharing her insight about education design, specifically the shift in the role of teachers from delivering the curriculum to becoming learning designers, in order to take advantage of the affordances of learning environments – shifting practice with a change management focus. The learning environment cannot be re-defined without addressing the change management factors and so the classroom should be seen as creating a highly configurable learning studio to facilitate this.

The event will take place at Davidson Mains Primary School in Edinburgh and begin with a guided tour of the new primary school extension, Primary 1-3.

Classroom Design: An environment for the teacher and learning designer

The view of teachers is evolving from technicians who implement the educational ideas and procedures of curriculum to teachers as designers of learning environments and as experts in the art and science of teaching. As designers of learning and learning environments, design thinking is a necessary skill for educators to learn and apply. Professional designers – architecture, technology, fashion or interiors – have spent years dedicated to the pursuit of their design-based specialisation, so how can educators, almost by decree, become designers in the field of education design? Why does design thinking matter? If the speed and intensity of change continues apace, the ecosystem of the learning environment needs to be adaptable to the prevailing and changing conditions.
