Large-build and interior fit-out contractors are represented at the SBID Construction Council. The councils members span building and fit-out firms, as well as experts whose skills represent the highest industry standards to the interior construction industry.
Support partners from Structural and Building Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Health & Safety and Fire Regulation are among the many specialist building and business services that aid the services of an interior design project. Collectively, these skills and professions share methods of issue, liaise and consult directly with government and receive legal advice and opinion that create a 360 degree supply chain resulting in positive change, exemplary outcomes and spectacular interior projects.
The Council provides SBID’s professional network with an annual Engineering and Construction end-to-end Contract for online multi-use at a discounted rates. The contract can be used as the basis of the legal relationships agreed from concept, to procurement of works and management, including the terms of sub-contractors and consultants. It establishes contractual relationships through to project completion.

Dave started in a four-year apprenticeship in the carpentry and joinery trade serving the first two & a half years with Eden & Clements of Haunch of Venison Yard, London. He then transferred via the apprenticeship board to Hammond & Miles and started running small projects as a foreman progressing to larger total refurbishment as foreman. After which Dave progressed to supervisor level where work included major West End supermarket refurbishments and Porcelain outlets in Baker Street as well as many high end residential properties. In 1977, Dave started Cumberland with the aim of championing trade skills and building a company with skills and craftmenship at its heart. Since starting Cumberland, Dave has worked on all types of refurbishments including major structural alterations and managed all size of electrical and mechanical sub-contractors. Now in his 40th year at the helm, Dave has always dedicated some of his time to giving back to the industry, training apprentices to work with Cumberland in the same way his career began. He is former President and current Board Member of the National Association of Shopfitters, Former chairman of the Retail Trust London Ball Committee and also lectures design students at London Metropolitan University as well as assisting in creating second and third year NVQs for woodworking apprentices. He was awarded Freedom of the City of London in 2013 for Training, Apprenticeships and Charity work.
BAILEYGOMM is an experienced Building Services Consultant within the Built Environment. Our resources are complete with a full MEP design team. We function in all sectors of the construction industry. We have a flexible approach and are always able to find a solution that works for our clients. Innovation can be key to success, and we try to find these opportunities during the design process. We have extensive experience utilising 3D and BIM. BAILEYGOMM are accredited with BS EN ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 140001:2015 for our Integrated Quality and Environmental Management System in Design Consultancy and Engineering. BAILEYGOMM has been very successful in all the sectors be it retail, leisure, hotels, residential, health care or the highly technical pharmaceutical sector.
James a Director within Cumberland where he began his career as a carpenter apprentice in 1989. James successfully completed City & Guilds Advanced Craft qualifications, progressed to qualified Carpenter and then Site Manager. His long serving trade background and first-hand knowledge of the sites led to him subsequently becoming Contracts Manger. For the past 12 years he has been a Company Director at Cumberland, managing 60-70 staff and overseeing the design team. Since 2012 James has been a shareholder and member of the senior management team. His responsibilities include the development of the strategic direction of the organisation, managing and growing client relationships, as well as exploring business development and revenue generation. He has continued to develop his knowledge by gaining Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations Management and Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Construction Senior Management. James is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Building and finds genuine satisfaction in dedicating his time to mentoring employees who are also studying for their degrees in Construction Management. His assured self-confidence and his excellent tradesman skills ensure he has a good rapport with clients and employees alike.
Council Aims
SBID foster a culture of continuous improvement, teamwork and pride for the benefit of our employees, partners and the public. It requires genuine commitment to improving the lives of those who use the spaces that the design industry create. It requires an understanding of local values and culture, safety, wellbeing in performance and skills at all stages of a project to effectively and safely deliver a concept. Interior design is the translating of processes through an array of trades and professions to create an enduring impact.
SBID operate across all interior design disciplines, from industry training and supply industries to drafting and accrediting course modules for university BA degrees, accrediting design courses and teaching establishments. SBID also accredit products and manufacturers training CPDs.
The SBID Council understands the duty of care required to align its training methods, creativity and procurement structure to generate a qualified design plan through a series of overlapping trades, disciplines and professions to procure. The true success of a building project is the skilled and trained staff with quality management control at all stages of procurement. From design scheme, installation and final completion, each project is improved by industry shared collaboration.
We take our duty to act responsibly at all times very seriously through proactively managing the impact of our partners activities on the environment, the people and the communities in which design, fit-out and construction forges an impact on recreation, work and living environments. In particular, we place the conduct and ethics of those involved in or affected by our business behaviours as our core organisational value, aiming to eliminate error by setting and accrediting the content of training that converts into industry standards. Together, a designer’s plan implemented by contractors take a leading role in driving change across our industries. We seek ways to reduce the effect of operations on the environment through sustainable materials and product technology. We endorse and celebrate the highest achievements in safety conditions adopted through project management and the treatment of people throughout the entire supply chain. Jointly our communication further aims to eliminate risk, error and costs leading to exceptional best practice construction methods and installation which concludes in a successful client handover.
This partnership also sets a new benchmark for the industry in support of the governments Net Zero Carbon ambitions for 2050. SBID is the British interior design partner of COP26, championing innovation in the design of reduced energy products, sustainable materials and solutions throughout the home, workplace and in leisure. Adopting alternative design methods and processes in construction and transport design will help us all to reach that target.
