It’s designed to provide protection from a range of risks, including mistakes in your work, intellectual property disputes, compensation claims and contract disputes. Other covers can also provide protection against various risks faced by practicing interior designers.
Whether you’re only offering design services, where claims generally involve errors or omissions, or you’re providing additional fitting services (even if you’re subcontracting out) and could be liable for execution failures beyond poor workmanship, we have cover to suit your needs.
Example 1. There’s an error with your design.
The issue You’re an interior designer contracted to design a high-end kitchen with bespoke cabinetry and your client is facing delays because you miscalculated the cupboard dimensions which has affected the plumbing.
The claim You’re now faced with a claim from the client looking to recoup the additional costs they’re facing due to the redesign, increased labour, and delayed project completion. Fortunately, your professional indemnity insurance covered the associated costs of the rectifications and legal fees.
Example 2. You’re in charge of an entire project that’s gone wrong
The issue You’re an interior designer offering the full works to a boutique hotel client upgrading their lounge area. You’re providing designs and will project manage the fit. The client has hired subcontractors to install custom lighting and furniture based on the incorrect designs you created, which has later caused the electrics to short circuit and catch fire.
The claim Luckily, no one was harmed but the hotel faces significant costs to repair the damage. They’re also claiming for lost revenue due to a temporary closure.
Your professional indemnity insurance will cover the professional negligence aspect of the claim, covering your legal fees and part of the settlement. As for the physical damage, it’ll be covered by the subcontractor's public liability insurance in this instance.
Designed to protect policy holders in financial disputes if clients make a claim against them.

If you’re found responsible for causing financial loss to your client by providing inadequate advice, services or designs, professional indemnity insurance can cover your legal costs and the expenses involved in defending a claim, as well as compensation paid to the client.
Although not a legal requirement, some regulatory bodies and professional organisations, including the SBID, make professional indemnity cover a condition of membership or accreditation. Some professionals may be required to have professional indemnity cover as part of a contractual obligation. Some may choose this cover for the protection and security it provides if their advice or service fails to meet a client’s expectations.
Depending on the risks you and your business face, you may want to consider getting other covers on top of professional indemnity insurance.
Relevant covers for an interior design professional could include:
The cost of professional indemnity insurance varies depending on different factors. Things like the level of cover you need, the number of people you employ, your annual turnover and the risks associated with your business activities will likely affect the cost of your insurance.
