22nd March 2022 | IN DESIGN ADVICE | BY SBID ShareTweetPinterestLinkedIn Sometimes your home requires a bit of an extra touch to create unique experiences, especially if it is an open-plan space. In regular homes, the separation of rooms is usually done through doors, windows, walls and flooring. You might pass through an archway and know you’re in a different space, or see the change in flooring as a sign you’re now in the kitchen instead of living space. While flooring is an easy way to show a change in an open-plan space, doors and walls defeat the object of open plan living. So how can you easily show a room change while remaining true to your open-plan home? By adding levels. Read on to find out how. A Level Change A level change is a great way to divide a room into two while still keeping the room as one space. You can choose a simple step up, or a larger level that also requires one or two stairs to reach. It usually works best using different flooring and textures, such as moving from smooth, sleek wood to a coarser stone floor. Make sure you keep your heavier materials beneath your lighter ones for the best effect. A lower down living space can create a more cosy feel, evoking the feeling of a sofa pit without actually building a sofa into the floor. A raised dining space makes for a classy home that separates the eating area from the living space while still being nearby and visible. Not Just For Living Spaces Adding a level is a great way to change up the feel of a bathroom. By having a level change between the sink and the bath area, you can create a statement area of the home perfect for relaxation. You can also use levels in the bedroom to create great storage solutions. Raise a bed onto a level and fill the level space with drawers, allowing you to save space and create smart storage. It also helps to increase the floor space of your room by moving storage and bed to the same area and opening up additional space for more furniture or to create an open area.
