Coming together to celebrate the cruise community, registration is now open for Cruise Ship Interiors Expo America (CSI) and Cruise Ship Interiors Expo Europe (CSIE). CSI will take place in Miami, Florida, the heart of the cruise world from 10th – 11th November, while CSIE is located at the ExCeL in London – one of the design capitals of the world from 1st – 2nd December.

Which show will you attend?

The cruise interiors community is galvanised by the thought of reuniting after nearly two years since they last met in person. These exciting live events will host the industry leaders across cruise lines, architects, designers, outfitters and suppliers, all ready for the return to face-to-face business. Visitors can expect vibrant show floors featuring YSA Design, SMC Design, Trimline, AROS Marine, Bolidt and more, with exhibitors ranging from the lifeblood of cruise interior design to land-to sea newcomers.

After sampling the new products and innovation of our exhibitors – including textiles & materials, furnishings, outfitting, retail and outdoor attractions – attendees can visit the live Cruise Conversations Conference. Industry leaders from cruise lines, shipyards and design firms will be speaking on the most relevant and urgent topics of today, including the role that interior design will play in the reinvigoration of the cruise industry.

The return of face-to-face networking

CSI and CSIE will both kick off in style with their Big Cruise Reunion Party – and the networking only starts there. Targeted and curated networking events – including sought-after opportunities available only to CSI Plus members – will take place across both shows, restarting the conversations critical to the cruise interiors supply chain. Networking on the show floor will include the industry favourite Happy Hour and be open to everyone who attends CSI and CSIE.

Anne Mari Gullikstad, Senior Interior Architect YSA Design, founding partners of CSI and CSIE, said, “Being dedicated to cruise ship interiors, the event attracts many different actors from the industry, under one roof. Further, we see the effort the exhibitors go to, with amazing stands to showcase what they do, and this makes us proud to be part of the scene. We look forward to the return of these live events immensely.”

Celebrating the industry with the Cruise Ship Interiors Awards

After a challenging year it is crucial that we celebrate the achievements of the cruise interiors community. The second Cruise Ship Interiors Awards launches at CSI, where voting will take place on the show floor. Celebrate the people, projects and teams that make our industry great.

The virtual booths will act as an easily accessible overview of each company’s rugs representing their style and ethos. Live chat and pre-bookable online meetings will be available directly from these booths.

TALKS

The Talks programme at COVER Connect will focus on the themes of Sustainability, Collaboration and Interior Design.

In one of the seven panel discussions, Vanessa Brady OBE, founder of the Society of British and International Design (SBID) will speak to three renowned interior designers about their approaches to successfully incorporating rugs into their projects: Erinn Valencich, Founder of the L.A.-based Erinn V. Featuring a conceptual exhibition, a digital fair, an online talks programme and tailor-made onsite brand experiences, the new Downtown Design hybrid programme will help the regional design industry to reconnect and engage across digital and physical platforms.

In light of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and in keeping with physical distancing measures, the event will take place at the Design Quarter in Dubai Design District (d3) across the entire duration of Dubai Design Week from 9-14 November 2020.

Comprising of four key elements, the programme is curated to help both the A&ID community and brands gain inspiration and insight, network and navigate the new design landscape.

CONCEPTUAL EXHIBITION

At the heart of this year’s activations is Downtown Design’s exhibition, ‘The Shape of Things to Come’, which invites the region’s architects and interior designers to imagine how we will work, live and play in a post-pandemic world. From an open call, selected concepts will be presented as a multi-media exhibition aimed at spotlighting progressive design thinking from the Middle East.

A DIGITAL FAIR

Continuing to support the objectives of brands and buyers in these challenging times, Downtown Design will present a digital showcase allowing design professionals and enthusiast to discover the latest collections and trends. Underpinned by an amplified digital strategy, the virtual event will offer participating brands, country pavilions and designers a range of benefits to help them raise their profile in the Middle East and beyond.

PHYSICAL BRAND ACTIVATIONS

As part of this year’s agile format, Downtown Design will also curate opportunities for brands looking to reconnect on the ground. From pop-up installations and capsule showcases, to creative collaborations – presented within the d3 Quarter and in collaboration with Dubai Design Week – participating brands will benefit from access to both key trade and consumer audience, and will be supported by Downtown Design’s B2B programme.

ONLINE TALKS PROGRAMME

Over the years, Downtown Design’s eagerly anticipated programme of talks and workshops, The Forum, has brought leading names in design to the Middle East. As technology intermediates the design industry, this year’s talks will be presented digitally and feature regional and international experts spotlighting the new value system that has evolved as positive response to the crisis.

Oxley's Furniture at Maison & Objet 2020

Oxley’s Furniture launch new design range, Scroll

The first presentation of Scroll will be on display at Oxley’s exhibit on Stand B11, Hall 7. Scroll is inspired by the carvings left on stonework by the ancient Celts of the British islands. The carvings on their monuments are enormously varied but many include the Celtish knot; an interlocking weave that has been incorporated in objects since the dark ages. Oxley’s have coupled this ancient design on the table tops to the sensuous flowing lines of the chair to create a range of elegant outdoor furniture.

Simon Hudson, Managing Director said “The Scroll design represents the interweaving of two Oxley’s fundamentals, our British heritage and our ability to use recycled aluminium to create intricate, timeless and beautiful outdoor furniture. As with everything we make, it is the reuse of a resource to produce our unique designs that makes them so special”.

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, MAISON&OBJET has decided to fix its eyes firmly on the future and explore the new trends in consumer behaviour being driven by generations Y and Z. The self-evident theme, “(RE) GENERATION”, will run throughout 2020. Setting out to analyse the attitudes, desires and expectations of Generation who are digital natives, the whole year’s celebrations will be devoted to these committed millennials who are looking for a better world, changing the rules and revolutionising consumer behaviour in both the home and lifestyle sectors.

Ready for the new generation

The January’s edition will decipher the desires and expectations of an “engaged generation” that has grown up in a world of crisis affecting the economy, the environment, identities, migration; whilst the September fair will rutn the spotlight on what the “augmented generation” wants – a generation rasied on a diet of social media and the Internet.

An Engaged Generation

“Faced with multiple global crises, today’s twenty- and thirty-somethings are keen to pull together to change the world…” explains Vincent Grégoire, trend hunter at NellyRodi. “It is a generation that is deeply concerned about making a meaningful difference, which in itself is injecting new values into everyone’s way of living.” These well-informed consumers dream of getting back to nature, adopting vegan materials, bringing the outdoors in. Led by ethics, they advocate fair, responsible and virtuous trade.

In a similar vein, these community-minded individuals champion small regional productions and return to handcrafted wares that are underpinned by solig social and human foundations. With sustainability being another factor that tops their priority list, this engaged generation also flies the flag for exchanging items and buying second hand; turning upcycling into a veritable lifestyle.

An Augmented Generation

“Hooked up to the internet on a drip feed, what this Wi-Fi generation also wants is a smoother and easier relationship with consumption. They want to try things out, voice their opinions and use the web as a source of inspiration”, adds Grégoire when describging the continually connected Millennials. Constantly primed to spot new talent on Instagram and always receptive to the latest high-tech gadget, the tastes they develop are measured against the yardstick of digital aesthetics.

Their mantra? Being cool. An attitude that goes hand-in-hand with a quest for well-being. This point of view embraces the charm of soft beds and squishy sofas as the ultimate cacoons for a spot of cosy surfing. Aficionados of all the customisation options the World Wide Web brings, they go wild for the feel of good messages that are splashed across cushions, and their avid passion for viewing or creating tutorials of every kind elevates them to the realms of DIY enthusiasts.
