Perfect for all those who want to bring their own ideas to life: IMO – short for “In My Opinion” – should be seen as an invitation to create an expressive and personal design for the home bathroom. The series from Dornbracht fits effortlessly into many different styles, and will be available as a refined design from April 2024. With the aid of artificial intelligence, a video piece has been created to emphasise the universal character of IMO.

A morphing video, produced with the aid of artificial intelligence, shows the universal character of IMO in a playful way. The depicted interior designs merge, to produce innumerable architectures.

Hybrid forms, fluid transitions

The moving images translate the versatility of IMO in an eye-catching and playful way: Providing the starting point were four, newly-created bathroom architectures showing the fittings series in completely different settings – including a pink guest bathroom, an urban apartment bathroom, a family bathroom in fresh, pastel yellow, and the premium version in soft sage green. The shapes morph into one another, allowing the bathrooms to transition smoothly between each other. The forms, colours, and structures of the interior designs merge continually, and are seen caught in dynamic motion. Dornbracht uses this to provide valuable impetus for designing home bathrooms.

The soft sage green gives colour to the “premium bathroom”, and is combined with light shades of wood and classic white elements to represent functional elegance.

Subtle refinement: IMO now more delicate

The reason for the artistic project is the thorough review of the IMO series. Sieger Design, a partner of the Iserlohn-based manufacturer for many years, gently changed the design of the fitting. “IMO is a fitting that works in many contexts and in many furnishing styles,” says owner Michael Sieger. “Now, after more than 13 years, we have given it a refined, lighter, and therefore contemporary appearance. It is more slender, making it seem more delicate and even more precise. But in making the refinements, we have retained the proportions and traits that distinguish IMO: These include, for instance, the striking shape of the spout, and the combination of two basic geometric forms, the circle and the rectangle,” he continues.

Four new bathroom architectures are the starting point for the moving images. Here: the small guest bathroom, the “Powder Room”. IMO in Matte Black creates a particularly expressive contrast against the pastel-pink background.

Lower water consumption and numerous new product types

The water consumption of the basin fittings was also optimised as part of the refinement. The reduced flow rate achieved a saving of approximately 35%, with the spray pattern barely changed.

In the “apartment bathroom”, balanced browns are combined with wood provide naturalness and homeliness. The bathroom architecture is designed for urban living environments, conveying a visual sense of openness and spaciousness, even in a small area.

Lastly, Dornbracht added numerous new product types and finishes to the series, so that IMO can adapt even better to individual ideas and requirements: Just one of the many innovations is the two-hole mixer, where the handle can be positioned anywhere on the washstand. With Matte Black, Dark Chrome and Brushed Dark Platinum, there is also a far wider choice of dark finishes available.

For the refinement, Dornbracht’s partner, Sieger Design, subtly changed the striking, hybrid design form of the IMO series.

Charlie Smallbone, founder of Ledbury Studio, may have made his name in kitchens, but at his core, he is a furniture designer. Charlie’s passion lies in taking natural materials and crafting beautiful pieces – for any room. As such, when the owner of this Hampstead home enlisted the help of Ledbury Studio for a complete home makeover, Charlie designed furniture not only for the kitchen but also for the master bedroom suite and media room.

The monumental kitchen island has prep space and room for casual dining
A drinks cabinet with contemporary ribbed glass doors is located next to the dining table

“This is a very elegant and spacious Edwardian home, with high ceilings and lots of natural light,” says Charlie. “Therefore, we designed pieces that followed the classic lines of the house, but with plenty of contemporary touches. It was a particular joy to work with swathes of stunning natural stone in every room. I’m delighted with the final result – as are our clients!”

The breakfast cupboard is conveniently placed just behind the breakfast bar

The kitchen

The Ledbury Shaker kitchen is a modern interpretation of Charlie’s original painted kitchens from the 1980s. This version features beautifully crafted and simply made furniture, updated cornicing, and bespoke aged-brass handles. It blends seamlessly with the house’s age while maintaining a contemporary style. Painted in a muted colour palette of soft white, it incorporates luxurious materials such as Arabescato marble worktops, splashback, and a specially designed integrated double sink. The cooker hood above the Wolf range cooker is finished with textured Marmorino Venetian Plaster for added visual appeal.

A handy kitchenette is located in the corridor between bedroom and ensuite bathroom
The master bathroom is a fabulous combination of marble and walnut

Master bedroom, ensuite bathroom and dressing room

Upstairs, in the master bedroom, Charlie designed an upholstered headboard in natural oak that wraps around the bed and matching bedside tables. This creates a peaceful and serene space to unwind. Additionally, there is an adjoining kitchenette, eliminating the need to go downstairs for a drink! Designed in walnut and marble, this handy space houses a coffee machine and kettle, with a fridge drawer for cool drinks on demand.

The master bathroom is a fabulous combination of marble and walnut
The teak dressing table

Moving into the master bathroom, the walnut and marble theme continues. Charlie selected a walnut veneer for the impressive double vanity, which features walnut interiors specifically designed around a chimney breast to maximise storage space. Above the vanity, there are custom mirror cabinets for additional storage. However, just like in the kitchen below, the standout feature is the stunning Arabescato marble. It is used for the vanity tops, bath surround, and shower, adding a touch of Hollywood glamour reminiscent of the golden age!

The teak dressing table is the focal point of the adjoining dressing room
The teak dressing table features a leather-lined drawers with compartments to keep the contents organised

The master suite is completed by the dressing room, which is surely every fashionista’s dream. This beautiful space includes a custom-made teak dressing table placed by the window to make the most of the view. The stunning piece not only has leather-lined drawers to keep items organised, but also a convenient vanity basin set into the top.

Great nights are guaranteed in the specially-designed media room

Media room

Last, but not least, Charlie designed furniture for an incredible media room. Fast becoming an essential for the family home that has it all, Ledbury Studio is being asked more and more to create cupboards like these. In this design, walnut veneer is bookmatched across the width of the cabinets to fabulous effect. Housed inside are a drinks cabinet, TV and sound system, plus drawers for storage, including an integrated fridge drawer. Illuminated open shelves for showcasing treasured pieces provide the finishing touch.

Prices for a Ledbury Studio kitchen start from £70,000.

About Ledbury Studio Ltd

Charlie Smallbone needs little introduction. The founder of iconic brand Smallbone of Devizes, he has been pushing the boundaries of kitchen design for over 40 years. Charlie’s latest venture, Ledbury Studio, was born of his desire to harness the beauty of original materials whilst creating practical kitchens that exude style and elegance.

This week’s instalment of the Project of the Week series features a soft and elegant kitchen design by 2023 SBID Awards Finalist, Poggenpohl Hampstead.

Poggenpohl Hampstead were commissioned to design, specify and install a luxury kitchen into a family home in Essex.

SBID Awards Category: KBB Design

Practice: Poggenpohl Hampstead

Project: Poggenpohl Hampstead – Collins

Location: Essex, United Kingdom

Poggenpohl Hampstead - Collins
Poggenpohl Hampstead - Collins

What was the client’s brief?

To create a luxurious kitchen space showcasing Gaggenau appliances, featuring a soft and elegant colour scheme, and incorporating high-quality, durable countertops. The kitchen should provide a seamless blend of functionality and aesthetic appeal, creating a comfortable and visually pleasing environment for cooking, entertaining, and daily activities.

Poggenpohl Hampstead - Collins

What inspired the design of the project?

It was important to have discussions with the client and view their previous kitchen for touchpoints on things they really loved and wanted to retain. We then wanted to frame the views through the large arched windows, and not disturb the eye with use of wall cabinets. The use of full height cabinetry in a metallic champagne coloured aluminium allowed dynamic colour shifts to the area throughout the day as the material has wonderful refracting properties of light.

Poggenpohl Hampstead - Collins
Poggenpohl Hampstead - Collins

What was the toughest hurdle your team overcame during the project?

The bridged sink countertop in front of the arched window. We worked with the countertop supplier to not only ensure the weight was considered, but also that pipework for water inlet/ waste outlets had routes and access for servicing. Additionally the height was carefully planned to ensure the waste trap was not visible from inside or outside the kitchen at varying levels.

Poggenpohl Hampstead - Collins

What was your team’s highlight of the project?

The flexibility and freedom permitted by the client, the end result has a lot of technical aspects which tested the team to achieve something which covered all the client requirements whilst retaining a kitchen which can withstand daily use. The client was very happy, which ultimately is the goal of any project and this has already led to multiple referral clients.

Poggenpohl Hampstead - Collins
Poggenpohl Hampstead - Collins

Why did you enter the SBID Awards?

We have often entered the SBID awards as they are a prestigious, trusted, and recognised company viewed by many industry professionals. With the client’s permission we wanted to showcase our work to a wider audience and demonstrate the journey Poggenpohl has been on. The company ethos, design flexibility and material libraries have rapidly increased in the 12 years I have been part of the team, and we are proud to have a product which is exquisitely engineered to last for decades.

Poggenpohl Hampstead - Collins

What has being an Award Finalist meant to you and your business?

We were thrilled that the judges felt the kitchen merited being a finalist, and hope the public vote reflects this too. As the Poggenpohl brand continues to grow in diversity of design, it is our intention to showcase our finished work more regularly via professional and prestigious avenues such as SBID.

Following the success of the award-winning Armstrong kitchen collection, the British brassware and sanitaryware manufacturer Perrin & Rowe has taken this design DNA into the bathroom. Combining an industrial aesthetic with a designer’s eye for balance and proportion, Armstrong offers a luxurious take on a pared-back design trend, with distinctive knurled handles and raised levers paying homage to our industrial past.

Perrin & Rowe Armstrong Bathroom Collection
Perrin & Rowe Armstrong Bathroom Collection

Perrin & Rowe’s foundry in Wolverhampton is just a short walk from the former site of the Stafford Road Railway Works. From 1858, it produced over 800 steam engines for the Great Western Railway. Most were designed by two brothers, Joseph and George Armstrong. Intended as durable workhorses, their locomotives still stir the emotions today. Perrin & Rowe’s Armstrong bathroom collection has been inspired by these brothers, transforming the purely functional into a model of timeless elegance.

Perrin & Rowe Armstrong Bathroom Collection

Beautifully proportioned with restrained detailing, the Armstrong bathroom collection is one of the most comprehensive ranges Perrin & Rowe has ever launched. For basins, there is a single lever mixer and a dual lever mixer, both available as wall-mounted or deck-mounted. There is a complete Shower Set with hand-shower and overhead rose. Accessories include robe hooks, a paper holder, a towel bar or towel ring, and a matching built-in soap dispenser for a cohesive design. The standout piece is perhaps the freestanding bath-shower mixer. It takes 4-5 hours of skilled polishing to bring this glorious bathroom centrepiece to final perfection.

Perrin & Rowe Armstrong Bathroom Collection
Perrin & Rowe Armstrong Bathroom Collection

As with all Perrin & Rowe brassware, the collection is designed by the in-house design team at Rainham in East London. Tap bodies are forged at the Perrin & Rowe foundry in the Black Country using the highest quality brass, poured by hand at 1700° Fahrenheit into moulds. After machining, specialist polishers develop the deep, lustrous finish. It’s a time-consuming and painstaking task.

Armstrong can be specified in Chrome, Nickel or Pewter or a choice of special finishes; 24-carat Gold, Polished Brass, Satin Brass, and English Bronze. Perrin & Rowe’s two brass finishes are unlacquered, so will develop a unique patina over time, enhancing the beauty of the surface. For a true industrial look, English Bronze offers a darker metallic finish that brings out the detail of the knurled handles.

Perrin & Rowe Armstrong Bathroom Collection

In discussions at House of Rohl’s London showroom, interior designers expressed a strong interest in a range of luxury bathroom brassware with an industrial edge. The Armstrong bathroom collection has been created to match this demand. Previewed earlier this at ISH in Frankfurt and Design Week in London, the initial reaction to the bathroom collection was as positive as it had been for the kitchen collection, some 2½ years earlier. It has already been shortlisted for an international design award by the Society of British & International Interior Designers (SBID). Armstrong is now available in the UK and most EMEAA markets.

Straight-line geometry is having a moment in bathroom design, a trend embodied by the latest additions to the designer RAK-Petit collection of washbasins from RAK Ceramics, now available in square.

Creating a sense of orderliness and simplicity, the straight lines and square profile of the new washbasins in this stylish shape are available in a floorstanding or countertop version in striking Alpine White ceramic. Standing at a tall 900mm high, the floorstanding RAK-Petit Square washbasin is an excellent space-saver in en-suites and cloakrooms where floor space is at a premium, while the countertop version is half as tall yet equally as arresting in appearance.

RAK-Petit Collection - RAK Ceramics
RAK-Petit Collection - RAK Ceramics

Created for RAK Ceramics by renowned Italian designer Giuseppe Maurizio Scutellà, RAK-Petit is a collection of small washbasins designed with small spaces in mind. With minimal shapes and small dimensions, the collection includes deep-based washbasins that can be installed alone or combined with RAK-Joy vanity units.

Vaia from Dornbracht is also available for the kitchen, as of now. The series of fittings created by Sieger Design stands for harmony, and combines a traditional design language with progressive elements. Its fine lines and flowing transitions are fully in keeping with the Transitional Style – and it is stylistically assured in the setting of the new “Metropolitan Eclecticism” architecture.

The three-hole bridge mixer with a pull-down function and the characteristic cross handles.
A Vaia Bar Tap in Brushed Dark Platinum.

A real highlight: the bridge mixer
A wide-ranging product programme is available, covering many areas of application: Vaia as a single-lever mixer, for instance, can have both a pull-down function and a rinsing spray on the side. The American style bridge mixer will be the highlight in any kitchen: It is available either as a three-hole variant with a pull-down function, or as a two-hole version with a rinsing spray on the side – both come with either a teardrop-shaped lever, or the classic cross-handles. A Bar Tap and a Pot Filler complete the series.

Vaia is also available as a Bar Tap. Seen here in Brushed Durabrass (23kt Gold).

Eleven different finishes, including the new Dark Chrome as well as the Champagne (22kt Gold) finish in brushed or glossy, add refinement to the Dornbracht design fitting. The warm, golden hue is captivating, particularly when combined with natural materials and colours. By contrast, Dark Chrome has an understated, timeless elegance that is truly impressive.

Vaia as a bridge mixer will be the highlight in any kitchen.
Seen here is the two-hole variant with a rinsing spray on the side, in the Brushed Durabrass (23kt Gold) finish.

“Metropolitan Eclecticism”: a combination of different stylistic influences
With its soft radii and delicate spout, Vaia represents a balanced design language that is always receptive to anything new. It is fully committed to the Transitional Style: an interior design trend that combines past and present, and skilfully strikes a balance in a game of opposites.

Functional, yet aesthetically pleasing: Vaia as a bridge mixer.

The Dornbracht fitting creates a harmonious ambience, especially in open plan kitchen and living rooms that reflect the urban spirit of the metropolis, and effectively combine different stylistic influences.

Dornbracht’s Vaia is stylistically assured in the setting of the “Metropolitan Eclecticism” kitchen architecture.

This is also true for the new “Metropolitan Eclecticism” architecture. Here the open-plan kitchen acts as the focal point of life together, where favourite recipes are cooked, and culinary experiments as well as lively discussions take place. The freestanding island and bar stool design mixes a modern country house style with contemporary elements: Kitchen wallpaper, varnished wood, and natural stone, together with stainless steel and geometric shapes, create a pleasant, sociable atmosphere. Vaia is quite at home here, and both the warm gold Brushed Durabrass (23kt Gold) and elegant Brushed Dark Platinum finishes are equally convincing – as they show innovative ways to combine tradition and modernity.

Just like the bridge mixer, the Pot Filler also takes its inspiration from America. Once again, the finish is Brushed Durabrass (23kt Gold).

What has been your most significant company highlight or success from the past year?

This year, we celebrated a major milestone – our 45th anniversary! It’s an incredible achievement that we’re absolutely thrilled about. One of the highlights of the past year was the complete refurbishment of our Chelsea showroom. We transformed all four floors, introducing exciting new features like the Studio concept, which focuses on colour, texture, and finishes. We had the pleasure of collaborating with renowned interior designers, Barlow and Barlow, who designed four unique displays. These displays showcased eclectic schemes with a classic contemporary twist, incorporating vibrant colours and playful patterns. But that’s not all. We have even more excitement as we are currently in the process of refurbishing our extensive Battersea showroom, set to be completed by the end of 2023. Keep your eyes peeled for the incredible transformation!

What are the latest trends you’ve noticed in your client’s requests?

We don’t believe nor follow trends per se, they come and go. However, we have noticed an increase in clients embracing colour, patterns, and various textures in their designs. This shift could have been influenced by advancements in technology and the growing popularity of our Wall&Deco WET SYSTEM wallpaper, which can be directly applied in shower areas. We have also observed a rising demand for wellness-focused features. Clients are now seeking steam generators for walk-in showers, along with shower benches to enhance relaxation. Our Sunshower has also gained popularity, as it combines the benefits of sunlight during showering by utilising warming Infrared and carefully controlled UV light. It’s a fantastic option for those who crave the feeling of the sun. We remain committed to offering innovative solutions that cater to our clients’ evolving desires and needs whether they are trendy or timeless.

How do you see the interior design industry evolving in the year ahead?

Looking ahead, we suspect sustainability and wellness will be the focus of the coming year. As people become increasingly conscious of our planet and environmental impact, they will seek out environmentally friendly options for their bathroom. The concept of at-home spa bathrooms is continuously evolving, especially after the pandemic, with a growing array of products designed to create the ultimate sanctuary at home, so it is definitely something to look out for in the upcoming future.

Is there anything new you are excited to be working on?

We are constantly working on lots of exciting projects, but one that our contracts department are very excited to be working on is the iconic Whiteley London Development where we are proud to be doing both the hotel and residences.
