This Autumn, the Clerkenwell Design Trail, on 4-5 October, will bring the A&D community together to re-connect and network across Clerkenwell’s historic cobbles.
This first interdisciplinary talk event for the exhibition 'Small Spaces in the City: Rethinking inside the Box' at Roca London Gallery
Curated by Clare Farrow Studio, the talks panel will focus on the vitally important theme of health and wellbeing in small urban living-work spaces, from a designer and user point of view.
Featuring William Bracewell, Principal Dancer of the Royal Ballet, whose new film explores movement and wellbeing in small spaces; Tokyo architect Toshiki Hirano and his Rika-chan doll’s house; Proctor & Shaw; and Richard Beckett from the Bartlett who is doing a live probiotic workspace experiment.
Other participants in this inspiring event will be Tokyo adviser and architectural designer Toshiki Hirano from the Kuma Lab at The University of Tokyo, who has taken the Rika-chan dolls house as a playful but also very serious model for future small space design, investigating its light, compact and foldable thinking with a view to future micro transforming designs; architect Mike Shaw of Proctor & Shaw, whose award-winning Shoji Apartment plays with the idea of translucency, vertical stacking and an opening and closing cocoon that enhances the psychological and physical experience of a tiny home; and Richard Beckett, Associate Professor at The Bartlett School of Architecture, who has collaborated with an immunologist from UCL to conduct a live experiment entitled ‘Imagining a probiotic microbial workspace’, which visitors will also be able to interact with and experience for periods of time.
Health in tiny spaces is not just about the dimensions of rooms and flexibility of furniture, or about bringing green plants in for pleasure and detoxing the air. It is about recognising that over-sanitised spaces disrupt the balance of microbes in our living and work environments, especially since the pandemic, resulting in autoimmune diseases that are on the rise. Beckett’s groundbreaking exhibition and experiment that blends architecture with science and medicine, brings the forest floor and ‘forest bathing’ concept out of nature and into the smallest of spaces. The results of his experiment will be revealed at the close of the exhibition in January 2024.

And, these inherent design selections are being made easier thanks to new innovation and technology from brands within the sector. In this conversation we discuss some of the solutions which are readily available and how small changes can add up to make a bigger difference.
Panellists:
• Roddy Clarke, Journalist (Chair)
• Jules Haines, Founder and Director of Haines Collection
• Simone Suss, Founder and Director of Studio Suss
• Roberto Martinez, Member of the Executive Board at Kaldewei

Sustainability is today's most urgent topic for interior designers. In 2021, the World Travel and Tourism Council established an ambitious roadmap to reach net zero by 2050. This set out guidelines suggesting sustainable design practices for hotels, airlines, and cruise lines. These three sectors are already making progress, with prominent changes including key industry players setting sustainability targets and initiatives, adoption of circular product lifecycle schemes, and the cruise interiors community collaborating to establish a Sustainable Maritime Interiors initiative.

The inaugural Sustainable Design Summit (SDS) built strong foundations for the event, with many meaningful conversations and insights taking place across the day’s plenaries and roundtable discussions. These offered a variation from the standard conference format, providing an increased focus on collaboration and in fostering new connections between delegates.
“Fantastic venue, great mix of people and some really interesting speakers. A really timely and important event,” Ben Orson, FlyZero Cabin Lead at Orson Associates comments. “It was both enjoyable and highly useful for making new contacts and picking up new ideas and insights. I certainly hope to make it a regular item in the diary.”

Now in its second year, SDS attendees will be turning their attention from conversation to action. This will be catered to in a curated agenda featuring interactive breakout sessions. Here, representatives of these three industries will converge to hold deep cross-sector conversations ranging from product lifespan planning to creating a more collaborative supply chain across all stakeholders. Sustainable Design Summit will also host a Product Showcase featuring the most environmentally responsible products within the cruise, hotel, and aviation design sectors.

Expert-led conference sessions will navigate a variety of topics including understanding, analysing, and using emissions numbers to drive improvement. Delegates will also gain insight into how they can avoid greenwashing in marketing and understand the regulations and legislation sustainable products must comply with. Speakers already confirmed include Zuzana Hrnkova, Vice President & Head of Marketing, ATR, André Pettersen, President of Hotel Operations, Hurtigruten Norway, Sam Hall, Director, Interior Design - Europe - IHG Hotels & Resorts, and Siu Lie Tan, Founder, Circular Symbiosis.
