Show Director, Cleere Scammell said, “It is important that we give our buying visitors as much useful information as is feasible, to make their visiting time at JFS as productive as possible. In an age when change is measured in seconds, not years, and sustainability is a necessity not an optional extra, architects and designers are increasingly tasked with proposing projects that have longevity. How can practitioners ensure they are taking the lead when it comes to future-proofing their projects and who is setting the agenda for tomorrow’s built environment?
Have you discovered the new Maison&Objet yet? Since the last edition in September 2018, Maison&Objet (M&O) totally revamped its layout, entirely tailored to designer’s needs. Reconnecting with the fundamentals, M&O reorganised its offering to launch two new aptly named hubs: Maison and Objet!
The professionals-only trade fair introduced this new layout to help visitors find their way around the event’s vast offering. The two main themes were further divided into four styles for Maison and seven product families for Objet. This change was implemented in order to simplify the structure of the fair’s offering, improve visitor experience and encourage chance discoveries. With 119,633 visits made from across 171 countries, the success of the previous edition will once again pave the way for another memorable and inspiring design event in January. The Inspirations Forum introduces the theme, ‘Excuse my French’
For each session of M&O, NellyRodi analyses the latest consumer trends and sociological phenomena, and encapsulates them into a theme. The topic chosen for January 2019 may have a humorous note to it, “Excuse My French!” but, it looks very seriously at a re-emergence of the country of Molière on the international scene. All about the French art-de-vivre in France and abroad, Excuse my French will explore what makes French style so distinctive and attractive in a globalised economy, who are its inspirations and symbols today, and which designers, manufacturers, artisans best express the modern French heritage.
Vincent Grégoire at NellyRodi attributes this theme with the renewed curiosity about the French as “A sort of fascination at the moment”. For him, the movement is linked to globalisation “In a world where things are becoming standardised, people are looking for something different”. We couldn’t think of anywhere more fitting to bring this trend to the forefront than the quintessentially Parisian trade fair set in the city of the indescribable Gallic quality that exudes an easy allure, an effortless chic and a distinctive sense of style.
The country has long been a reference world-wide for the arts, fashion, design and lifestyle. For many, it is quite simply the epitome of elegance. Grégoire pinpoints a number of factors responsible for the country’s new-found resurgence. Leading the way are a whole host of smaller companies – Petites Maisons, who reinterpret traditional savoir-faire with product lines characterised by a spirit of invention and exclusivity. A “nouvelle vague” of creatives open to multicultural influences has also emerged. They shake up traditional French chic by injecting inspirations from elsewhere in a new mood of fusion.
In light of this mix’n’match approach, the Trend Forum in Hall 7 will be presenting a selection of products, à la française which will embody the essence of this new cultural phenomenon and encapsulate the renaissance of the French scene. Adorn in theatrical décor inspired by the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, a small truck displaying the essential M&O trend mook will be parked in the centre, surrounded by a number of handpicked contemporary items to create deliberate contrast against the classical setting. “There will be disruptive, dissonant elements and a spirit of contradiction”, promises Grégoire.
Save the date! Rendez-vous with trends lovers from 18-22 January 2019

The Doon Street site – the largest super-structure ever built by designjunction – will feature up to 200 design brands and pop-up shops across the furniture, lighting and retail sectors. The Riverside Walkway will showcase a series of outdoor installations, whilst Oxo Tower Wharf and Bargehouse will host brand activations, talks, exhibitions and experiential events.
On the first floor of the Doon Street site, STILL BY FORM is a unique restaurant installation designed with a palette of harmonious layers of colours and texture to provide a setting for quiet contemplation; allowing visitors to disconnect for a moment of observation and reflect away from the bustle of the show.
Curated by design consultancy and procurement specialists BY FORM, the pop-up restaurant serves as a backdrop for exciting interior pieces that are yet to be showcased in the UK. STILL is influenced by simple Danish design and organic Japanese aesthetics, showcasing a selection of hand-picked collaborations with brands and designers. The pop-up restaurant installation features a refined collection of design across lighting, textiles, surfaces and furniture, and new materials, including brands like Anour, &tradition, KABE Copenhagen, Zilenzio and Atkinson & Kirby. The menu will be provided by 26 Grains, from Neil’s Yard London.
STILL utilises Caesarstone‘s newly launched Topus Concrete surface design for the restaurant’s main bar. Developed as part of the Caesarstone design team’s wider exploration of industrial finishes and weathered patinas, Topus Concrete’s gentle linier pattern is reminiscent of Jupiter’s rotating cloud bands, while its warm blush pink colours sit harmoniously within the calming palette used across STILL.
International design brand Gufram will also be presenting its playful Disco Gufram installation on the ground floor of the Doon Street site. Visitors to the show will be able to experience the immersive nightclub-inspired interior, a space intertwined with pop culture from the mid 1960’s, re-thought and re-shaped by Gufram. The Italian manufacturer has collaborated with three design studios on a disco-inspired collection: an extensive collection of sofas by Italian Atelier Biagetti, a series of innovative cabinets by Dutch design collective ROTGANZEN and a colourful range of rugs by French duo GGSV.
At Oxo Tower Wharf and Bargehouse, Swiss furniture manufacturer Vitra will present ‘The Original. About the power of good design’ as part of its international roadshow. The installation focuses on Vitra’s classic and contemporary products, offering insights into the product development processes and recounting the origins and stories behind some of their most recognisable designs.
‘The Original. About the power of good design’ exhibition forms part of Vitra’s ‘The Original’ campaign, communicating Vitra’s commitment to maintaining close relationships with its designers – who are referred to as authors – and the result of these collaborations always being truly original.
Flooring creatives, Bolon will launch nature-inspired collection, Elements, in an exhibition showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainability. Subtle and versatile, the Elements range reflects the textures of the natural environment and is inspired by materials such as linen, oak, ask, cork, birch and marble. The exhibition will highlight Bolon’s two new sustainable initiatives, Closing the Circle and Cradle to Cradle with NoGlue®, and reflect on its history of environmental consciousness which started when its founder, Nils-Erik Eklund began making woven rugs from vinyl waste sourced from a Stockholm factory in 1949.
Urban Roof Gardens, leading design practice creating unique and stylish roof gardens, will bring its new Urban Biophilia concept to the Bargehouse courtyard. Exploring the profound relationship between people and nature, the installation will provide city dwellers with a botanical sanctuary.
Leading bathroom brand VitrA will present its new Plural collection conceived by Milan-based American designer Terri Pecora. Inspired by the heritage of communal bathing spaces and rituals, the range introduces the bathroom as a social hub and informal living environment where people meet and reconnect with themselves and their family.
Lighting manufacturer ANDlight based in Vancouver, Canada, will unveil three new product families – the minimal Array collection and the astral-inspired Orbit light by Lukas Peet and the Vine by Caine Heintzman.
designjunction will see the official launch of the Form sofa family, the latest collection by Icons of Denmark. Bringing Danish design to the UK, the brand will also unveil a new one-seater booth responding to the needs for flexible, but private office furniture solutions.
This year, designjunction will not only be returning with an abundance of the latest design innovations, product launches and trends for the forthcoming year, but will be bringing with it an inspirational troop of thought-provoking outdoor installations on the Riverside Walkway. British designer Steuart Padwick will be among the few to make a dramatic addition to the London skyline during designjunction in support of mental health with his project, Head Above Water. With its panoramic views of St Paul Cathedral and the iconic city skyline, the 9 metre high sculpture on Queen’s Stone jetty is designed to initiate the vital discourse about a topic which is all too often swept under the carpet.
The ‘Head’ is deliberately gender, ethnicity and age neutral and stands as a symbol of hope, bravery, compassion, positivity and change for those who have or are still confronting mental health issues. Steuart Padwick first sculpted a head in clay and then developed the concept into its current form using precision engineered, renewable and sustainable cross-laminated timber panels, provided by Stora Enso. To realise the structure Steuart Padwick worked with structural engineering expertise, Ramboll. It is a model of sustainable, smart design and build.

Prepare for an Unexpected Rendez-Vous with MAISON&OBJET Paris!
MAISON&OBJET Paris (M&O) opens its doors this month with a new layout, new areas, new purchasing experience and even more design inspiration! From 7th – 11th September 2018 design professionals from across the globe will be descending upon Paris to see the best in creative excellence and innovation. The new layout focuses on inspiring designers with two main hubs and 11 different sectors.
Since 1995, M&O has been the world’s foremost event for professionals of the lifestyle, interior, and design industries. Every edition brings together some 3,000 brands and more than 90,000 unique visitors – of which 50% hail from outside France. Promoting new contacts and emerging talents, M&O presents twice a year the latest sources of inspiration by shedding insight into current and future industry trends. As a result, the event has become an effective catalyst for brand development and business growth – and SBID are delighted to offer SBID members complimentary tickets!
Fundamentally a multi-sector and cross-industry event, M&O provides a snapshot of the market twice a year in Paris. The broad, yet curated offering shown gives the fair a unique edge. This is why a pertinent structuring is strategic to attract brands and buyers, and keep them engaged. This year, M&O has taken on a new challenge: a complete overhaul of its structure. The new layout is the reflection of the organisers’ wish to go back to basics: Maison and Objet. Philippe Brocart, Managing Director of SAFI (the company that organises M&O) comments on this new approach:
“Since its inception, the fair has always seen two categories of visitors, each with very different expectations for their visits: retailers and specifiers. The definition of the new sectors was guided by practical criteria chosen to clarify the offering and make it more accessible for both visitor categories. On the one hand, retail buyers appreciate the great variety of products on display, but need a clear divide by product typology and price range to save time. On the other, specifiers tend to look for specific solutions for their projects, with a more style-oriented approach. With this in mind, the structure of the offering was entirely revamped to provide greater efficiency, especially important as professionals have grown accustomed to having easy access to whatever information they need since the development of online tools.”
“Since its inception, the fair has always seen two categories of visitors, each with very different expectations for their visits: retailers and specifiers. The definition of the new sectors was guided by practical criteria chosen to clarify the offering and make it more accessible for both visitor categories.
